In John Wesley preached a sermon titled “Christian Perfection” at Oxford University to explain and defend his emphasis on entire sanctification. When the sermon was published shortly after, Charles appended a poem on “The Promise of Sanctification” in support of his brother. John Wesley and Charles Wesley John and Charles Wesley sought to renew the Church of England by having Christians take seriously that they were called to live holy lives. The Wesleys stressed that every Christian should be sanctified. Sanctification is the term used to describe the work of the Holy Spirit to free our lives from sin. John Wesley wrote, “There is scarce any expression in Holy Writ which has given more offense than this. The word ‘perfect’ is what many cannot bear. The very sound of it is an abomination to them” (Outler 70). John Wesley’s doctrine of entire sanctification and Christian perfection, due to its seemingly radical and fanatical nature,.
