In John Wesley preached a sermon titled “Christian Perfection” at Oxford University to explain and defend his emphasis on entire sanctification. When the sermon was published shortly after, Charles appended a poem on “The Promise of Sanctification” in support of his brother.   John Wesley and Charles Wesley John and Charles Wesley sought to renew the Church of England by having Christians take seriously that they were called to live holy lives. The Wesleys stressed that every Christian should be sanctified. Sanctification is the term used to describe the work of the Holy Spirit to free our lives from sin.   To continue with the quote from Wesley on sanctification being perfect love – “its properties, or inseparable fruits, are, rejoicing evermore, praying without ceasing, and in everything giving thanks (1 Thessalonians ff)” (Wesley ch26). The early Pentecostal movement arose from the Holiness movement, and like its parent, shared John Wesley’s views on sanctification: that it was an instantaneous experience of “entire sanctification” or “Christian perfection” and that it was a separate experience from conversion.

Book Description Sanctification is a central theme in the theology of both John and Charles Wesley. However, while John’s theology of sanctification has received much scholarly attention, significantly less has been paid to Charles’ views on the subject. 2 days ago  “When Charles Wesley taught us to sing, ‘He breaks the power of cancelled sin,’ he was teaching the fundamental truth about how the cross and our battle with sin are related. The cross cancels sins for all who believe on Jesus. Then on the basis of that cancellation of our sins, the power of our actual sinning is broken.   John Wesley wrote, “There is scarce any expression in Holy Writ which has given more offense than this. The word ‘perfect’ is what many cannot bear. The very sound of it is an abomination to them” (Outler 70). John Wesley’s doctrine of entire sanctification and Christian perfection, due to its seemingly radical and fanatical nature,.   Sanctification is a central theme in the theology of both John and Charles Wesley.
